From Industry Experience to Entrepreneurship
Adalberto 'Albert' Morejon, President of Absolute Construction Services, spent more than three decades working in the construction industry before deciding to build something of his own. With a civil engineering degree from Florida International University and extensive experience in site construction, Albert understood the critical infrastructure work that often goes unseen. His expertise spans underground utilities, storm drainage systems, paving, sidewalks, and the groundwork that prepares a site for successful development.
After years of working for other firms and qualifying companies with his licenses and engineering background, Albert reached a turning point.
“It took years for me to develop the courage to finally say, ‘Okay, let me get my licenses and my civil engineering background and put this to better use if I go on my own and do it the way I think it should be done.’”
In 2011, alongside his wife and business partner Elizabeth Morejon, Absolute Construction Services was founded during a challenging economic period. While the construction industry was still recovering from the Great Recession, Albert recognized an opportunity to focus on smaller, complex projects that larger firms often overlooked.
Solving Problems Others Walk Away From
Absolute Construction Services quickly became known for taking on difficult projects where other contractors had struggled.
“There were projects that were a little complicated and other contractors had failed to meet their contractual obligations, so he took over those projects, and we completed them successfully,” Elizabeth explained.
Albert’s approach is rooted in collaboration and problem-solving. Every project is different, and success depends on working closely with designers, managers, and construction teams to find practical solutions when conflicts arise underground or on-site.
“We listen to our clients and explain what’s better for them. One project is never the same. They’re all unique.”
A Growing Family Business
As the company grew, it remained deeply rooted in family values. Elizabeth eventually joined the business full-time as Vice President and Director of Business Operations, helping manage contracts, finances, and strategy. Their children also became involved, with their son overseeing operations and their daughters assisting with office support.
“Going on your own is very stressful, but we knew as a family we had his back,” Elizabeth said. “We’re proud that the company provides employment to so many people in our community.”
Discovering the Florida SBDC at Florida Atlantic University
Like many small business owners, the Morejon’s faced challenges navigating growth, resources, and the business side of construction. That changed when they connected with the Florida SBDC at Florida Atlantic University.
“That whole thing with the SBDC program was like an epiphany moment,” Elizabeth shared. “Small businesses struggle knowing where the resources are and having SBDC have all the resources available in one place is just a game changer.”
Through the Florida SBDC at Florida Atlantic University, Absolute Construction Services gained access to training, mentoring, and guidance that helped them move strategically forward.
Making the Leap from Subcontractor to Prime Contractor
One of the most significant outcomes of working with the Florida SBDC at Florida Atlantic was the company’s transition from subcontractor to prime contractor.
“We were able to move from a subcontracting position to a prime position,” Elizabeth said. “We were able to acquire that because of the consistent collaborative approach and mentoring that we received from the SBDC.”
Albert emphasized how difficult that leap can be without guidance.
“Without the SBDC, it’s very difficult for small businesses to make that leap forward and have the trust that somebody’s there to really help you and guide you.”
Hands-On Consulting That Makes a Difference
The Morejon’s credit their Florida SBDC consultants with providing hands-on, practical support across many areas of the business. From government contracting and certifications to financial management and marketing, the guidance helped them build a stronger, more resilient company.
“One of the biggest perks with SBDC is that it’s a no-cost service they provide to small businesses,” Adalberto said. “When you’re starting out, everything counts. That wealth of knowledge at no cost is a big help.”
Elizabeth echoed the value of working directly with consultants who felt like part of the team.
“The collaboration approach and genuine support I’ve experienced makes it feel like they’re an extension of our company. They have a genuine interest in making sure we’re successful.”
Building for the Future
Today, Absolute Construction Services continues to grow by expanding its work across municipal, institutional, government, and private-sector projects. With the foundation built through decades of experience and strengthened by the support of the Florida SBDC at Florida Atlantic University, the company is positioned for long-term success.
For the Morejon’s, the journey reflects more than business growth. It represents resilience, family, and the value of having the right partners along the way.
“Don’t be afraid,” Albert advises other business owners. “SBDC has got your back. They will go the extra mile to help ensure your business is successful.”
