Phatz Sports Bar & Grill: Building a Landmark with the Florida SBDC’s Guidance

Phatz Sports Bar in Fort Pierce, Florida, is a powerful example of what happens when entrepreneurial vision meets the right support system. Owned and operated by Tessa Adams, Phatz has grown from a small neighborhood restaurant into a custom-built, full-service destination that now anchors a revitalized corner of historic downtown. The journey, however, was anything but simple.

Tessa began her business in 2009 with a single leased location on Avenue D. With a focus on serving good food in a welcoming environment, she steadily built a loyal customer base. As demand grew, she moved to a larger space on US 1, where the business continued to thrive for five years. But like many entrepreneurs, Tessa reached a point where she knew that leasing space could only take her so far. She wanted to own her own building to fully control the environment, expand her services, and create a space that matched her long-term vision for the brand.

The idea of building a new facility from the ground up was ambitious. Tessa knew she needed expert guidance to navigate the process of acquiring property, securing financing, and managing the construction of a new commercial space. That’s when she turned to the Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Indian River State College.

Working closely with Regional Director Tom Kindred, Tessa developed a comprehensive plan to bring her vision to life. The SBDC team helped her evaluate funding options, identify opportunities for growth, and understand the long-term implications of such a major investment. Their support proved to be a pivotal turning point in her entrepreneurial journey.

In May 2025, after years of planning and preparation, Phatz Sports Bar officially opened the doors to its new, custom-built location in downtown Fort Pierce. The new space featured a full bar, expanded menu offerings, upgraded seating, and the capacity to host events on high-traffic nights, such as Monday, Thursday, and Sunday football. More importantly, it allowed the business to attract a broader demographic and significantly elevate the customer experience.

Beyond the business itself, the project had a larger community impact. The new Phatz location contributed to the revitalization of downtown Fort Pierce, helping to transform the area into a more vibrant, destination-driven district. The restaurant became not just a place to eat, but a point of pride for the community.

With her new facility thriving, Tessa has already begun planning for the future. Her long-term goal is to grow the Phatz brand into a multi-location business, reaching across Florida and beyond. The foundation built with the support of the SBDC has given her the tools, knowledge, and confidence to pursue that growth with a clear strategy.

Tessa’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking guidance when making significant decisions for small business owners. The SBDC played a central role in helping turn her vision into reality. Today, Phatz Sports Bar stands as a landmark of what’s possible when entrepreneurs are supported, prepared, and driven to succeed.

Because if I hadn't met Tom with the SBDC, I probably wouldn't have gone this far, trying to do it on your own is not going to work”
